Liz Ellis - Media Identity and Former Netball Player

Liz Ellis - Media Identity and Former Netball Player Liz Ellis Media Identity and Former Netball PlayerPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister I was quite determined law was what I wanted to do, but after working for four years I realised it wasnt something I was particularly gifted at and I didnt love it. I loved playing netball so I thought I could perhaps make a career in that field. Liz Ellis put her law career on the backburner to pursue a career in netball. She went on to play in the Australian netball team from 1992 until 2007, and was captain for her final four years on the court. She is Australias most capped international player and has won the countrys Most Valued Player Award four times. Lizs career continued to soar after her retirement from the game she is now a well-known media identity and runs coaching clinics for the next generation of netballers. When did you first realise you would be able to make a career out of netball? It was after I finished university and had been working as a lawyer for four years. I was quite determined law was what I wanted to do, but after working for four years I realised it wasnt something I was particularly gifted at and I didnt love it. I loved playing netball so I thought I could perhaps make a career in that field. I never actually plotted out a career path, everything just sort of evolved. How did you move into professional netball? When I started at the National League level, we were totally amateur. We didnt get paid at all. In my final year, I only got paid $8000 for playing for my club, so there never was a career for me as a professional player like there is for the girls now. I was able, however, to build my career around what I did on the court. It enabled me to plug into certain things like coaching clinics, media work, speaking engagements and sponsors, and I wrote a couple of books. Any athlete will tell you that through your athletic career, regardless of what sport youre in, you make some g reat contacts and if youre strategic about how you do that, there are opportunities that arise from that. How have the opportunities been boosted? The main change is the ANZ Championship. The top players in the club teams now are able to earn enough money by playing netball full time. The junior players arent quite at the level yet where they can stop working. What has been your career highlight to date? Probably my final game, which was captaining Australia at the World Championships final and winning. We had worked towards that moment for several years, so to actually have it come off in fantastic fashion with a great team was awesome Whats day-to-day life like for a netball player? We trained together as a team three times a week, two court sessions and a fitness session, and then we would play once a week. Every second weekend would involve interstate travel. It was fairly hectic and our training sessions had to be supplemented by our own home training sessions. Day-to-day train ing was pretty routine, but my days were always different because I had different commitments. What are the badeanstalt bits about being a netballer? I dont have a lot of cartilage left in my knee, but Id rather have no cartilage than give up all the great memories and experiences Ive had. I guess there are a lot of sacrifices if you want to be a professional athlete its something that engulfs your whole life. Every meal you eat, youre thinking about it, it curbs your social life because you cant afford to go out and party and still be able to train at that elite level. I missed out on lots of family and friends parties and weddings simply because if you make that commitment to your team, the team comes first. However, that gets made up by the time you spend with a great group of people and the unique experiences you have. What has your career evolved into now? I run netball coaching clinics during school holidays, I coach for the Macquarie Foundation, I commentate netball for ONE HD and Channel 10, and I still have all of my sponsors from when I was playing so I have plenty of work to do with them, like the Nestle commercial which is on at the moment. Its evolved into a really nice career. Have your former teammates gone down similar paths to you? No. A lot of girls I played with were tertiary educated, so they are physios, doctors and accountants. Certainly from my generation of players, I was the only one who made a career out of netball. A lot of the girls used the opportunity when they were playing to educate themselves and have careers outside the sport. What advice do you have for people who are thinking about a career in netball? Certainly follow your dreams someone has to play netball for Australia so it may as well be you I think its a fantastic goal to have, but like any elite sport, I would also advise people to keep an eye on their education educate yourself as far as you can, simply because one day your sporting career will be over. My law deg ree is my backup and it gives me plenty of peace of mind to know its available if I need it. Whos your role model? Keeley Devery. She played the same division I did and she went on to forge a career in the media and still works for Fox Sports. Shes someone who I really admire for both her playing and for her post-sporting career. Anne Sargeant is also someone who I look up to for the way she made a career for herself out of her netball-playing career.Sports Management ResourcesSports centre manager sample resumeSports centre manager sample cover letterInterested in becoming a?General ManagerEvent ManagerEvent CoordinatorSports Event CoordinatorRecreation OfficerPopular Career Searcheshow to become sports agentsports management courses online in australiasports management courses adelaidesports management courses brisbanesports nutrition online courses australiaSports Management CoursesBachelor of Business (Sport Management)Enquire erreichbar Enquire OnlineDiploma of Sport and Recrea tion ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineAssociate Degree of Sports BusinessEnquire Online Enquire OnlineGraduate Diploma of Sports AdministrationEnquire Online Enquire OnlineHelen IsbisterRelated ArticlesBrowse moreStressWork/life balance10 Tips For Managing Your Stress At WorkThe server has crashed, youre filling in for colleagues that are sick with the flu, your boss doesnt seem to have time for your problems and an important deadline is looming. Our entire approach to the idea of work is wrong

Our entire approach to the idea of work is wrongOur entire approach to the idea of work is wrongFew people have communicated difficult ideas with as much clarity as Alan Watts. He is known today for the work he did to popularize Zen concepts in the west. Through his books and his recorded lectures, he touched on almost every major contradiction in life. His signature teaching and he applied it to almost every part of existence was that there is no end or destination. Watts knew that the point was ultimately to be where you are and experience things as they are here and now rather than in some romanticized past or future.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHe continually stressed how little understanding we actually have of reality and its contents, and he was often careful bedrngnis to make things more complicated than they needed to be.One thing, however, that he always felt strong ly about and that he observed modern society constantly getting wrong was our entire approach to the idea of work. In his own wordsYou are involved by and large in a very strange business system which divides your day into work and play. Work is something that everybody does and you get paid to do it because nobody could care less about doing it.In other words, it is so abominable and boring that you can get paid for doing it. And the object of doing this is to make money. And the object of making money, is to go home and enjoy the money that youve made. When you got it, you see, you can buy pleasure. No Such Thing As WorkNaturally, Watts definition of work doesnt apply to every job each one of us does. That said, the underlying theory of the role of work in modern society, though extreme, is largely right.Biologically, there is no such thing as a set requirement to do a set amount of work. Were programmed to strive for things and to struggle for survival, which itself is one definit ion of work, but overall, the concept of sacrificing time for money is a cultural construct.Weve created arbitrary distinctions to keep the economic machine running, which isnt necessarily bad, but its forced a mental contrast between the things that were supposed to enjoy and the things that we do in order to maintain our ability to do things that we enjoy. When we think of something as work, we automatically compare it to leisure, and by definition, if its the opposite of leisure, we think that its not something that gets to be enjoyed.Even if you have a job that satisfies all of your criteria for keeping you engaged and excited, this ingrained narrative that youre workingwhen youre doing that thing causes you to see your tasks and your demands as things that are enforced on you rather than chosen.Choice is an essential requirement in humans for a feeling of motivation and control, and our distinction of certain commitments as work completely strips that away from us.Given that we all have to make a living and that doing so is going to demand a big chunk of our time, its valuable to think of ways that we can make this time as pleasant as possible.Granted, not all circumstances enable an environment to see work as something other than that. That said, by merely taking a more beweglich approach to the commitments in your life by reducing overt contrasts between what you enjoy and what you dont, you can make it better. The Real Secret Is PlayAnother way to complement a lack of distinction is to see everything you do as play.Humans are playful by nature. While many of us give up the dolls and the action figures as we age, most of the activities that we consider enjoyable throughout the years, whether it be reading, creating, or exercise, are a form of play. Theyre a kind of game that we engage in.We choose to deliberately focus our attention on something, we strive to get the most out of it that we possibly can, and if we do it well, we get completely lost in a wo rld of joy and awe.The medium of play, although important, isnt really crucial. The underlying pattern of behavior is something that exists as a default and innate ability in our mind. It may come easier if you have a habit of enjoying a task, but it can be harnessed with effort regardless. This is something that Alan Watts advocated throughout his life. We get so caught up with existing definitions that we forget that the boundary between work and play is illusionary.Nothing in the world is inherently interesting. Things are interesting because we take the time and effort to make them interesting. If you have a fluid definition of work and leisure, then much of the time you can turn whatever the job is into play by gamifying it.If you practice a kind of presence about being where you are rather than waiting to get out of a task in the near future, and if you entwurf the circumstances around your demands to be somewhat challenging, then there is no reason that you cant enjoy the time that pays you. This mentality also saves you from getting caught up in the rat race to nowhere. You play because its enjoyable, not because youre chasing some imagined destination of success. All You Need to KnowAlan Watts passed away in 1973, but much of his wisdom lives on in all corners of the world. You dont have to agree with everything he believed to see that there is merit in his argument about the flaws in the modern concept of work. Its something that takes up more of our time than almost anything else in life, and yet, its also a major source of human misery. We contrast it with leisure, and as a result, we treat it like a thing thats the opposite of leisure. Often that may indeed be the case for many of us. That said, it doesnt help that weve created a false cultural narrative that thrives on a distinction rather than integration. If you see your life more fluidly as a commitment of responsibilities, and if you can treat these commitments as play, there is no reason work has to be a source of dissatisfaction. In fact, things you enjoy are interesting because, at some point, you took the time and energy to make them interesting. If you appropriately gamify your work, you can do the same there. If you happen to be in a position where its not possible to enjoy your work, maybe its time to make a change. Naturally, everyone has bills to pay and personal responsibilities. That said, if you can cover the basics, its at least worth considering alternative options. As Watts saidBetter to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way.Want to think and live smarter?Zat Ranapublishes a free weekly newsletter for 30,000+ readers atentwurf Luck. This article originally appeared on Design Luck. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your pr oductivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Job Interview Questions About Your Responsibilities

Job Interview Questions About Your ResponsibilitiesJob Interview Questions About Your ResponsibilitiesWhen, during a job interview, you are asked questions related to your current or previous positions, its important for your response to include a few detailed specifics about what you did in your previous role(s). Keep youranswer positive- its a good idea to bring up improvements or accomplishments, but best to stay away from mentioning frustrations or disagreements with co-workers. Since this is a very common interview question, make sure to prepare for it ahead of time, and have a good sense of how you would summarize your responsibilities for each of your positions. Generally, the focus will be on your current or most recent role. Once you can answer the question, Why do I think I have the experience and skills that make me a great candidate for this job?, youll be good to go Best Answers for Questions About Your Responsibilities The best way to respond to this interview ques tion is to describe your responsibilities in detail and toconnect them to the job you are interviewing for. This means that, prior to your interview, you should carefully review thejob descriptionfor the new position. Almost every job description you will encounter will provide a list of the skillsets and work experience an employer is seeking in their next employee (typically found under the subtitle, Responsibilities). For each requirement, ask yourself Why do I think I know how to do this function? When have I actually had to use these skills? How effective was I in performing this part of the job? What examples can I use to prove my aptitude for this job task? For example, if the job description requires that you have a solid knowledge of technology like Microsoft Office Suite or Adobe Creative Suite, be prepared to describe how youve used these programs in your previous job. If it requires that you have excellent customer service skills, be ready to cite a few occasions when you successfully handled sticky client relations issues. Then match your qualifications to the job Tie your responsibilities at your current or previous positions in with those listed in that job description. By doing this, the employer will see that you have the qualifications necessary to do the job you are interviewing for with his or her organization. Focus most on your responsibilitiesthat are directly related to thenew jobs requirements. For instance, if you are interviewing for a role that requires management skills, emphasize projects youve led, events youve planned, and people youve managed. If you are trying to land a job in a creative field like graphic design or marketing, bring along a portfolio of designs youve created for significant project assignments. Be descriptive and engaging in your summary of responsibilities- most likely, the interviewer has a copy of your resume availableand is looking for you to go beyond the information listed in that document. This is your o pportunity to provide the personal story that will advance you from being a name on the page to being a strong and memorable image in your interviewers mind. Avoid going too granular on the details company-specific jargon can overwhelm an interviewer. It can be a difficult balance, but strive to give a thorough description of your responsibilities, and use different language from whats on your resume. Mention any specific instances where you benefited the company, solved a problem, or had a major accomplishment. Results-oriented answers are beneficial here. You can say things like I created a schedule that stopped late delivery, earning the companys award for best team player. On a day-to-day basis, I was the primary point of contact with clients, working to ensure that their needs were met while escalating urgent matters to my supervisors. While you want to frame your responsibilities in a positive light, its also important to be honest. Dont embellish your job title or duties, beca use you dont know who the hiring manager will be checking with when they check your references. Advance Prep Is Key to Interview Success The best way to conquer any nervous anticipatoryanxiety before a job interviewisto be prepared. Reviewing your answers to common interview questions beforethe interview will also help you give better responses. Check out these frequently asked questions (and see the recommended best answers) in advance of your interview. Use them to role-play your response. You can practice with a friend, or by yourself in front of the mirror. Its wise to also remember that you are interviewing your potential employer at the same time that they are interviewing you and that they will be interested in how you respond to the standard question, Are there any questions you have for us about this job or our company? Here are some ideas for what to ask. Since this invitation to turn the tables often occurs at the end of the interview, having a strong response will h elp you leave a good impression on your interviewer.

Five Ways to Dodge and Deflect Job interview and Application Questions about Your Age

Five Ways to Dodge and Deflect Job interview and Application Questions about Your AgeFive Ways to Dodge and Deflect Job interview and Application Questions about Your AgeHow to answer age-related questions on a job application or in a job interview. Our experts agree Dont answer a question if you believe the reason its asked is to reveal your age. Thats easier said than done. Here are five ways to get around the questions without directly confronting the offending recruiter or philanthropisch resources representative.Restate the question. Kathryn Troutman advises that if an HR person asks for your high-school or college graduation dates, say, I went to the University of X, and it was a very successful time for me, she said. I was a member of student government and worked at the campus radio station. You dont have to answer that question with dates, and that shouldnt keep you from being hired. For online applications, give vague dates. While some online applications cannot be submitte d unless all fields are completed, you might be able to get away with a range of dates, or just list a decade, such as 1980s. Matthew Arrigale suggested that if the application still cannot be submitted, its worth contacting someone in the companys HR department to let them know you are having trouble submitting an electronic application and explain the issue. Its possible they dont know they shouldnt be asking that question.Express concern with identity theft if photo ID or Social Security numbers are requested. These are not items that need to be provided until you are hired, said Ellen B. Vance, senior consultant and advisory services practice leader at ti Group, an HR consultancy in Richmond, Va. But if youd rather not directly confront them with that fact, saying youd rather not hand over that information is perfectly acceptable.Provide work history going back 20 years at most. Any more, and it can date you, said Troutman. The most relevant work history will be your most recen t, and there is no reason to go back any further.Be aware of questions that could lead you to reveal your age. Asking innovative, legally defensible questions is one way human resources people can get age-related information, Arrigale said. These questions could be as innocent as, Are you over the age of 18? and, What are your long-term career goals? He advises candidates to stay on their guard and be aware of what the interviewer is really asking. An interviewer might leave a bit of silence after you answer it doesnt mean you need to fill that silence with more detail. Dont volunteer anything.

How To Answer Tell Me More About Yourself in a Job Interview

How To Answer Tell Me More About Yourself in a Job InterviewHow To Answer Tell Me More About Yourself in a Job InterviewLanding an interview with a recruiter is one of the first, and fruchtwein important, steps in achieving your employment goal. While most interviews are relatively straightforward and easy to navigate, there is one common inclusion that people many times have trouble with Tell me about yourself. However, this question is where you can truly tischset yourself apart from the rest. As such, boning up on the guidelines to follow is an excellent plan. Some interviewers like to pop this question first, while other prefer to wait until later on in the interview. Recruiters have different motives for posing it to you, such as to see if they can glean the extra information a direct question may exclude. Many times, their goal is simply to see if you have come to the interview prepared.Preparing for this question may take a little time and effort, but it will pay off in spades once you actually get in front of your questioner. The worst way you can answer it is with the popular reply, What would you like to know? Not only does this frustrate an interviewers goal of understanding you better from how you talk about yourself and your accomplishments, it also sounds like you did not take the interview seriously enough to even anticipate the question. The best way to prepare is similar to if you were rehearsing a speech. Develop your answer, and practice, practice, practice Stand in front of a mirror, and practice until things flow freely and naturally. The meat of your answer should be a highlight of the things you have accomplished, if they tie in to the position you are vying for. Following are some key points to remember for when the question inevitably does arrive.Avoid sharing mundane personal informationSome parts of your personal life, such as hobbies or special skills, are definitely pertinent when you are queried about yourself. However, drab facts, l ike where you were born, or how many siblings you have, are simply irrelevant. Keep in mind, the recruiters sole focus is what you can do for their company. Your answers should clearly outline what you have accomplished in the past, and how you are different from the rest of the multitude of candidates.Start Out With Your BonafidesGiven the level of pride you feel, as well as how much effort you invested in getting them, your specific credentials are an easy-to-remember way to start things out. Not only that, everything that follows is sure to sound better, since your official bonafides are the first thing they hear.Detail Your Employment-Related AccomplishmentsCertain qualities and achievements are important in virtually any job. These include strong demonstrations of leadership, a solid work ethic, and exceptional personal and professional confidence. Take a trip down memory lane, and come up with a few specific scenarios in which you demonstrated these qualities and accomplishmen ts.Stay On PointThe recruiter you are interviewing with is not a personal friend, so avoid babbling about personal issues best left to those you are close with. Try to keep the awkward pauses to a bare minimum, you should be prepared enough that excessive thinking should be unnecessary. It is a good rule of thumb to keep your response to this query at or under about a minute.Explain why you are interested in the jobUnless the position you are seeking is a highly-advanced or specialized one, chances are most people can perform it with the right training. One of the best ways to help your recruiter understand that you are different from the rest of the horde is to go into detail about why you are passionate about this type of work specifically. Tie personal hobbies and interests into the qualities and requirements of the job in question. Above all, never make it seem like you are only interested in the paycheck. Its StorytimeCold hard facts are good for certain situations, but answerin g this important question is not one of them. Your goal is to engage your listener, and the best way to do that is with a story that shows clearly a specific situation where you displayed the traits and experience the recruiter is looking for. It really doesnt even matter if the story is one about the work you would be doing directly. As long as it is engaging, and highlights a major and applicable achievement, it is worth its weight in gold. Stay Away from Common ClichesIf there is one thing a recruiter knows better than virtually any other type of employee, it is all of the catch phrases and cliches used by many job seekers. You want to be exceptional, and stand out from the rest, and common cliches sound canned and generic. Phrases like I am a team player, or I have a really strong work ethic, have been used so much that any effectiveness they once had has long since been destroyed. You would be much better served by working these qualities into the stories you will tell, and the individual examples you will share. Now that you have a basic understanding of what actually works when asked about yourself, this query no longer should hold any fear or anxiety when it comes up. Adding these tips and truisms to your verbal arsenal is usually one of the best ways to see that spark of interest in you light up your recruiters eyes. This article welches updated from the original on June 29, 2017
